The Fullerton Switcher arrived at Fullerton (Basta) today (1-27) at about 9:00 AM with a GP38-2 and a GP13 (747 and 1665), an empty center beam flatcar, a boxcar, 5 covered hoppers and 13 tankcars. They pulled 5 tank cars and spotted the 13 tank cars they arrived with. The local departed at about 10:00 AM.

The 1665 is a GP15, not a GP13 and I wanted to post this under the UP Anaheim Branch thread, Sorry.

Where exactly were these cars spotted & pulled at Basta (on BNSF)? From engine #s can assume a UP train. Were the cars left on old "West of Nick" sidings or at Hunts?

Although UP has a physical connection to BNSF here, they never interchange, and UP never enters BNSF trackage. They come off the Fullerton branch, descending a rather steep but short grade, and then back up into the food processing plant (was once Hunt's, not sure what it is now) and spot the tank cars of vegetable oil and other corn products. Then they pull away with the empties. I have some photos of the Fullerton branch at http://www.angelfire.com/ia3/socalrailfan/La_Habra.html The last photo is about a quarter mile or so before they enter the plant.

For several years after the crossing at Basta was eliminated, the UP Fullerton branch actually terminated there. If there is no interchange at that location, I wonder why they even added a physical connection. Are there any industries down the line that the UP used to serve that they somehow now reach by trackage rights?

The "connection" is not really much of one at all. Actually, the UP tracks empty into a pair of sidings that BNSF normally uses to store surplus intermodal cars, so interchange is made impossible by the cars blocking access to the BNSF mainline. They have no trackage rights. The last remaining industry that UP served in Anaheim is now served by BNSF's La Mirada local.

The UP line used to parallel the ATSF line all the way through Fullerton and around the southbound curve on the San Diego line. I'm guessing they served many of those industries just south of the station. For several years in the later 70's an old ATSF caboose was sitting on that portion near Highland. If you walk down the tracks east of the station the old roadbed is still very evident.

My post was about the UP switcher. The connection actually allows the BNSF to serve the Con Agra warehouse (formerly Hunts Weson). The BNSF used to serve the southside, but the redevelopement of the area eliminate there access. The BNSF uses some of the ex-UP track between Basta and Fullerton for car storage. They built short connection at both end of the remaining track. The AT&SF caboose was on a Santa Fe spur that serve the packing sheds on the south side of Walnut ST. and cut off the UP from serving them.

The joining of the UP Anaheim Branch (Fullerton Industrial Lead) to BNSF at Basta was done to "preserve" competitive rail service to the Con Agra site when SP merged with UP. SP had previously served the site via trackage rights on the U.P. Branch(an arrangement reaching back to consolidation of U.P. and P.E. trackage between Whittier and Fullerton many years ago), and when the two Harriman roads were about to merge, ICC or successor SurfBoard sought to preserve competition where the two were about to become one by granting a second road access over the new merged company's trackage to various sites and locations. Known as 2-for-1 concessions, they were instigated all over the new system, but this is the only example in Orange County. I don't know of BNSF ever exercising its rights to enter the site using the UP connection, but the junction was installed to demonstrate cooperation with the regulatory agency's concern about preserving competition.

Saw the UP Fullerton Local today returning to Los Nietos at 1122 crossing Beach Blvd. It had an SP painted SW1500 and a GP15-1, 10 tank cars, one Golden West boxcar and an empty center beam lumber car. I thought this local only ran MWF so it was nice seeing it on a Thursday.
