In Phoenix I saw a string of Union Pacific box cars. They looked fairly modern and normal, except for one thing. Their couplers were very long so the cars were spaced far apart, maybe three times the distance that normal boxcars would be. They looked like a model train that has cheap quality couplers.

Does anybody know about this?

they had "damage free" extended travel drawheads to reduce impact is slack action in the train.
