While watching trains along I40 I found in two seperate loctions two glass balls. They were many miles apart and right in the ballast. They are clear/greenish, about 3/4", and are full of air bubbles. ANybody know what they are or where they came from?

What you found may be cullet. Cullet is a scrap glass with is a traded commodity like any other scrap product. It is often transported in open top hoppers and gons. I used to have an account out of a windshield plant - plant received sheet glass inboumd, treated it and pressed it into windshileds, and shiped the scrap out in 2 bay, open top hoppers. These glass balls you found may be something similar.

Thanks for the info. If that is what these are,they have already been processed somewhere first. They are just like big glass marbles. I'm new here on this forum so I'll have to check if you can post a photo.

Used to see alot of those glass balls in Barstow yard. they came out of covered hoppers & were being shipped to glass manufacturers.
