I just found some very sad news about this beloved railroader from Southern California.
Chard worked for the Santa Fe Railway as the Cajon Summit operator from 1947 to 1967.
He is going to need all of our prayers to get through this.
We need more true gentlemen like him around our world.
What a truly CLASS ACT he is !

From the Cajon Group today:

I am sorry to report that the results of a recent test administered to
Chard has indicated that he has leukemia. His daughters will be flying
down from Montana tomorrow.

More information will be provided soon.

Thanks for posting this info. about Mr. Walker. I knew him personally in the 80s/90s, but then lost contact with him. I have a signed copy of his masterpiece "CAJON- Rail Passage To The Pacific." Still the definitive book on the "Pass." Chard and his wife Margaret used to travel with me on Amtrak's old Desert Wind, pointing out interesting tidbits as we rolled over his beloved "Hill."
