Amtrak plans to open a 72-room hotel inside Pennsylvania Station in Baltimore over the next two years, The Batimore Sun reported.
A Maryland developer will begin construction next year, and then the following year convert upper-floor offices into guest rooms. The hotel will be reached from the station's lobby. An operator for the hotel, which will cost $5 million, has been not been named.
"this development is a terrific example of how Amtrak can leverage its assets," Amtrak spokeswoman Karen Dunn told the newspaper. "Amtrak can provide other things beside rail service."
Amtrak also is considering building a hotel adjacent to 30th Street Station in Philadelphia.

Sounds like something that should have been done years ago. Especially with all the misconnects due to late trains. New York Penn station, Chicago Union Station, Los Angeles, Washington DC, Boston & many others would be great candidates for hotel properties at or adjacent to the stations. Amtrak could save millions in payments to hotels for putting up passengers who miss their connections. Reggie

The Newark, NJ station connects with a hotel (Hilton I think) with a direct elevated passageway. Sounds like the Baltimore station hotel would be convenient for passengers too. What is the local area like?

30th Street Station in Philly is in a somewhat better neighborhood than Penn Station in Baltimore. If I were going to stay awhile, I would not pick the Penn Station neighborhood. If it were just overnight between trains, OK, though why change at Baltimore? If they can get more revenue from it, fine.
