Seven people were injured - none seriously - when the southbound Texas Eagle, train No. 21, ran through the end of Keokuk siding yesterday morning and into the side of a northbound UP train bound Houston to Little Rock.

Both p42s on the Eagle (Nos.163 and 151) were derailed in the 9:55 a.m. collision, along with four Passenger cars: Baggage 1176, Transition sleeper 39044, sleeper 32011, and dining car 38059. The Lounge car remained on the rails. A dozen empty trilevel auto racks on the UP train were derailed, said UP spokesman Mark Davis.

The injured included the Amtrak engineer and six passengers, Amtrak spokesman Kevin Johnson said. All of the injured were treated and then released from a local hospital, he said. The train had been carrying 48 passengers and 11 crew members. Passengers were placed on buses after the wreck, and the Northbound Eagle was annulled, with buses used as alternative transportation.

The collision, which apparently occured at relatively low speed, is under investigation. Davis said it was obvious that the Eagle ran through the end of the siding. "The focus of the investigation is why," he said.

UP detoured about a dozen train trains off the route, which normally carries 35 trains a day. The railroad reopened the line this afternoon after replacing 680 feet of track on the main and siding.
