Okay all you Rail Travelers...We are planning to take the Starlight to LA and one of the sights we'd like to visit is the Getty Museum. Do any of you have tips on a motel/hotel to stay at and how to make transfers from Union Station to the hotel? Number 11 arrives around 9:15 pm, so late arrivals and transfers may be challenging. Just for info, I'd like to have a three star type of place to stay (someplace "nice" to make an impression on her). Thanks!

As an LA native and an Amtrak regular, one suggestion is that you disembark at Glendale and take a taxi, about $35 (as of today--8/17/00), to the Brentwood Holiday Inn, then use the hotel shuttle to the Getty. It will cost you much more in dollars and time if you go all the way into LA on the train. Also, local public transportation will not impress your friend. (Note: if you take a car to the Getty, you need a reservation WEEKS in advance to park, BUT if you don't need to park because you came on a hotel shuttle or by taxi or whatever, you can walk right in. Parking is limited, admission isn't.)

If you want to see anything besides the Getty while in LA, the best way really is to bite the bullet, rent a car, and put up with the freeway mess!

Hope this helps.
