I would like to give my husband a Rail Tour trip for a Christmas Present (he is a railfan, I am just looking for a fun trip). Looking for a one week trip next summer - does anyone have feedback on a tour through the Canadian Rockies or any other suggestions? Thanks.

My suggestion would be to travel in the off-peak season. I would suggest early October as the colors are fantastic at that time. Out of Vancouver you could travel VIA Rail to Jasper on the Canadian, the Skeena to Prince George & BC Rail back to Vancouver. You would see some beautiful country at a rather inexpensive price. It would require a layover in both Jasper & Prince George. E-mail me for more info. Yours Reggie

I agree with Reggie that a trip through the Canadian Rockies would be a great idea. Unfortunately, Via has, in recent years, taken advantage of the great interest shown in the autumn colours and considered most of October to be summer. On the "Canadian" the peak summer fare season now runs from the 1st of June until the 22nd of October. Because of the huge savings to be had by delaying one's trip until after the 23rd of October, bookings are hard to get until mid-November.

Are you wedded to the Canadian Rockies? The Colorado version, via the California Zephyr, is breathtaking in October -- and off-season rates apply. Done it twice, once in early October and once in late October, and the scenery is sublime.
