Can anyone suggest a good hotel (safe, clean) in DC near Union Station? Thanks.

The Harrington Hotel is inexpensive, clean, and about a block from a Metro station. It is 2 blocks from the Mall and within an easy walk to the White House. It's an older hotel and not at all fancy. But it's very inexpensive, close to both public transportation and attractions, and is a great value.

There is a Holiday Inn about two blocks from the Smithsonian. It is a twenty minute walk (or a five minute cab ride) from the station.

Try the Phoenix Park. It's very nice, and sometimes has reduced (read reasonable) rates on weekends. It's no more than a block from the station.

Another possibility (probably expensive, but in the off season, who knows?) is the Hyatt Capitol Hill (I think that's the name) on I think 4th Street.

There are also some B&Bs near the Capitol. Check one of the B&B directories for these.

I have to second the recommendation for the Hotel Harrington. It's just a short Metro ride from Union Station, but it's worth it. We stayed there for 4 days this summer and had a 2-room suite on the 10th floor and it was a corner suite as well! There are 3 restaurants on the ground floor and it's also very close to the FBI building and Ford's Theatre.

If you are planning to stay in DC for a few days and see the sites, check this hotel out.

Last Sunday night, I stayed at the Phoenix Park Hotel. It was a very nice place, and very convenient to the station -- only one block away. I got a very good rate when I made the reservation online at travelocity.com.

I have stayed at both the Harrington & the Phoenix Park Hotels. The Harrington is good, basic accomodation whereas the Phoenix Park is a fine hotel with nice restaurant & lounge on site. The Phoenix Park is also right across the street from Union Station & very convenient for anyone arriving at Union Station. Reggie
PS. Another good site to check for price deals is Turbotrip.com
