Does anyone know anything about our new Transportation Secretary, Norm Mineta? Specifically, what are his positions on Amtrak. How did he vote when he was in Congress? Has he made any comments about Amtrak's future since he was nominated by Bush? Just curious, since Amtrak's future just might hinge on what he does or doesn't do.

Norm Mineta seems like a very good choice for the post considering it was Bush who selected him. Mineta is a California Democrat with clear Democratic policies in terms of transportation (which is good news for Amtrak). He used to be Mayor of San Jose, and I believe he served in State Legislature. I know for a fact that he helped initiate all of those public rail funding programs which Governor Davis is so faithfully carrying out in this Golden State. Amtrak Chairman Tommy Thompson would've been the best choice, but Mineta sure ain't bad.
