I saw two good shows about passenger travel.
One was traveling through the Rockies which was a recent production, and another show about invention of streamliners. Two good shows if your are interested on your TV.

Saw both of the shows Joe & even though I enjoyed both, I'm even more anxious for my next rail trip. Reggie

I saw the Streamliners program, which was part of the American Experience series. It was very enjoyable, and it offered a great history of how the trains got started. I just wish it had given as much attention to why they disappeared.

On KQED it was followed by a travelogue on the Coast Starlight, which passes near here. It was a great show, too. It should be required viewing for every travel agent on the west coast. One interesting point: They interviewed a few first time train travelers on board. One man said he expected it would be like a bus, and was pleasantly surprised by the comfort. Another was a man in a wheelchair who was reluctant to travel by train, but found the handicapped sleeper to be extremely well designed and he was also vey pleased.

I agree with you Mr. Toy on how the show never gives an explaination of how passenger travel dissappear. But from what I have read from other sources you can pretty make an educated guess. I wish there was a transportation channel. Like a history channel that concentrates on the history of transportation. Thanks for the replies.

Passenger service died when the RRs lost the US mail contract. And now Amtrak hauls it! Imagine what might have happened if they could have gotten the lcl UPS traffic back then.

Actually the Streamliners program did make a brief one-line mention of the competition from government financed airports and highways as one reason why the trains died out. But more detail would have helped reinforce the message.
