I`m interested in a transaction anyone`s done purchasing Canadian funds in an ATM in Canada. I`m specifically interested in the amount purchased and the cost in US $$. I`m searching for the best place to buy CAD $$$.

I did it about three years ago and there were no fees at all - I just got a straight exchange rate! There weren't any pesky ATM fees like we have here! It was great! But - I don't know if the rules have changed in the past three years.

I'm from Victoria, BC and I did the opposite of that when I went to California two weeks ago, the ATM's automatically calculate the exchange rate.
About the ATM fees, Canadian Banks have used them for a while now. It's about 50 cents CDN per withdrawl. Depending which bank of course.

Whether or not you are charged any fee, and the amount of the fee, depends on your particular bank. On my recent trip to Canada, I withdrew funds from an ATM and got an exchange rate of about 68 US cents to a Canadian dollar. I think that using ATMs to get foreign currency is generally the cheapest and most convenient method.

That's the best way to go. Cheaper by far than any other method. No exchange fees & possibly just 50cents or a dollar bank fee.

To convert unused Cdn bills back to US, check out a Cdn department store or casino, they often give you a better exchange rate than a Cdn bank will. And keep all your receipts so you can claim back the GST tax (7%) at Canada customs when you leave.

50 cents or even a dollar Canadian is pretty minimal for a fee. Last time I was in Montreal this past fall I recieved about 1.40 canadian for each american dollar!
