Hey Kids!

I've written and published an extensive travelogue of my Memorial Day weekend trip on the Coast Starlight. See it at http://members.aol.com/mptoybox2/starlight_run_may_2001.html

Its sort of long, so if you don't want to read it all you have my permission to just look at all the purty pictures taken along the rails. I also got two great photos of Amtrak Cascades trains in Salem. You'll find them on page 4.

Enjoy!

Mr. Toy,
Great Travelogue, and I've only finished page 1 so far! Re your comment about CalTrain: The cars are basic, and rough riding, but they are fine for the relatively short journeys (an on-rails version of the minivan that took you to the Salinas station?)

A perfect travelogue, particularly for someone like me who has never experienced travel by rail in the USA.

I will be flying over to San Francisco from the UK next week (via Seattle) and will be travelling on the Zephyr, Capitol Limited, Lake Shore Limited, Southwest Chief and finally the Coast Starlight (from LA to Portland). I found the details of your trip very interesting and very informative - I now understand why I have been seeing 7 hour late arrivals in Portland.

The delays now seem to be returning to the more "normal" 2-3 hours !

I enjoyed reading your travel log. It really allows the reader to feel some of the highs and lows of long distance train travel. Overall, train trips are very enjoyable, unless you feel the need to watch the clock.
Thanks also for your CZ advice you shared in March with me. My wife and I had a Great round-trip from Emy-Chi. We will be making other train trips from now on. By the way, based on your advice, we also joined NARP & Amtrak Guest Reward.

My traveloge seems to have becone quite a hit. I sorta figured it would only be of interest to die-hard Amtrak fans. My friends on the AOL travel boards have also enjoyed it. What's more, my boss and another co-worker, who have never been on a train before, read it and now they want to try it.

Thanks for all the kind words. I'm planning on publishing travelogues of other trips eventually, including stories of my travels on the Starlight in the 1970s.
