The San Diegan Club will have a rail trip to Carpinteria on Saturday, Sept 29, 2001. Everyone is welcome. You don't have to be a member. There is no cost other than you have to obtain your own Amtrak ticket before you board the train. You can get on Amtrak Pacific Surfliner Train #765 at any Amtrak station. Just board and look for the rest of the group! Train #784 is the return train leaving Carpinteria at 2:08 PM.

This is just idle curiosity, since I live in New Jersey, but I don't see a train 765 in Amtrak's 4/01 National schedule. Do you mean #769?
Also, the train leaving Carpinteria at 2:08 is #782.
And just what is the attraction at Carpinteria ?

It's probably a matter of schedule convenience that drives the decision to stop at Carpinteria. Carpinteria is a small town with the "station" not too far from the beach. Santa Barbara is much larger (and more crowded and expensive), and the Goleta terminus is in "nowheres-ville", a turnaround siding next to the main line (and near the freeway) in a light industrial area.
