Not a bad piece. They got a few of their figures wrong, but they gave one of the most accurate assessments of the political situation that I have seen in a long time.

Excellent article! One can only hope the optimistic picture Mr. Belden paints comes somewhere close to being a reality.
The acknowlegement that Amtrak is desperately in need of capital funding is right on. In my opinion, the first priority for capital spending should be in fixing existing equipment - both rolling stock still on the road and those cars sitting at Beech Grove. Additional equipment is also needed (but not more P42's or Amboxes)
Another important point that must be remembered is in this quote from the article
Till, in an interview, said one thing the reform council did not recommend was emulating the way Britain sold its rail infrastructure to private operators. There, system reliability has plummeted, fares on many lines have soared, and Railtrack, the company created to maintain tracks and stations, went bankrupt in October. Government officials estimate that it may take $100 billion to make the system reliable again.

McCain is way busy planning that new airport in Arizona ... Besides, don't confuse him with the facts.

Hmmmm. Of course, most of the rail infrastructure in this country is already in the hands of private operators, and since Amtrak was formed on-time reliability (which is in the hands of those operators) has plummeted.
