Well a friend may be backing out on my at the last second on a trip that is scheduled for this thursday at 5:11AM already. I haven't received the final word yet, but what can I do? Can I get the ticker value for this upcoming trip as credit for a later trip? I know they don't refund, so is the credit for a later trip possible, and will they give me the full value of the tickets as credit?

You did not specify what type of tickets you have. According to the latest national timetable: 'Many tickets are refundable before travel begins, a refund fee may apply.' Rules regarding promotional tickets such as rail sale and 2 for 1 may vary by offer, and might be found on amtrak.com or through an agent. Sleeper fares within 7 days of departure are 'not refundable, but may be applied to future travel'. Original tickets must be returned.

My tickets were ones that I purchased with the online promotion where it was 25% if booked online before June 15th. And I guess I know my own answer now, since I called the 1-800 number. They cannot be refunded and have a $30 charge per ticket to credit it them. So if I end up not going the $291 spent goes down to just $231 in tickets for a future trip. Hopefully I can still go but I guess we'll see what my moron friend does.
