Whats up with the Two Cardinal Trains.
Are there two.
I know it says one is just the Cardinal and one is the Kentucky Cardinal.
But on the schedules it says both trains leave Chicago at the same time and arrive in Indianapolis at the same time, so do they split there, or what happens.

850-851 were the numbers assigned to the Kentucky Cardinal.

In "Amtrakese", an 800 train is one that is combined with another over a substantial part of its routing.

But, lest we forget, all of this is now quite moot; the KEYCARD was discontinued July 6.

Uncle Buck - I think you are getting the Kentucky Cardinal confused with the Illini. The Ky Cardinal never went to Effingham; it was in fact the same train as the CHI-WAS Cardinal between Chicago and Indianapolis, then the Ky Cardinal section split at Indianapolis and went due south to Louisville.

Effingham is served by the City of New Orleans and the Chicago-Carbondale Illini, which departs Chicago several hours earlier than the CONOL, and departs Carbondale late PM to Chicago. The Illini is still operating.

If the 800 series are combined with another train, why is the Heartland Flyer 821 and 822 when it shares no track, no rolling stock, no name, nor anything with any other train?

And shouldn't the Portland Empire Builder be 807/808, and the Boston Lake Shore be 848 and 849?

Just curious.
