Are you going to Las Vegas, New Mexico or Las Vegas, Nevada? The Southwest Chief serves both locations----one is a train stop, and the other is an Amtrak Thruway bus connection from Kingman, Arizona to Las Vegas, Nevada.

Unless things have changed recently (and I'm fairly certain they have not), Amtrak still handles checked baggage from the Lake Shore Limited in Chicago to the Southwest Chief departing Chicago. Your best bet is to confirm it with them by calling:
1-800-USA-RAIL, and when "Julie" (automated voice system) starts giving you options, you just say, "AGENT". Julie will then say, "I think you wanted to speak to an agent. Is this correct?"--then you say, "Yes". You will be on hold for several minutes until a person answers the phone, and you can double-check with them.

Where are you staying in Vegas? I go there all the time, and Venetian is my favorite.

Alyssa,

That train disappeared on A-Day 37 years ago. It made a comeback in the REAGAN Administration, then went away again in the CLINTON Administration.

The current timetable does not list Kingman, AZ as a checked baggage stop. This simply means there would be no one to unload your checked baggage from the baggage car at Kingman when you get off and transfer to the Thruway Bus/Van to Vegas. If you were going thru to LA, then checked baggage would be available because there is someone there to unload it.

When you say "carry on", are you thinking of the size limitations that the airlines give you for a piece of carry on luggage? If so, you don't need to worry about that. Bring your normal, big, heavy luggage with you. In the downstairs area of each car, there is a huge luggage rack---just put it there. Unless you're bringing an extraordinary amount of luggage and big boxes and crates, you'll have no problem at all.

Another option would be to rent a car at the Flagstaff Amtrak station (Hertz) and drive to Vegas. Flagstaff DOES have checked baggage and car rentals are right at the station. You could overnight cheaply at Flag and see some scenery by daylight.
