Quick question. I want to use the 30% discount (DC-NY), but it is too late for me because of the seven day in advance rule.
If I bought a ticket for a time in the future (so I could use the sale code), but instead boarded an unreserved train this week and presented my future ticket to the conductor, what would happen? would he notice? can you use tickets from any time on an unreserved train?

Tickets, even for unreserved trains, have a range of dates printed on them during which they're valid, with the first valid date being whatever date you bought the ticket for. You'd be counting on the conductor not noticing the validity dates on yours, and I think it's fairly unlikely they'd overlook that (especially since I'm pretty sure you're not the first person to think of doing this).
If the conductor did catch you, at best, you'd have to buy a full-fare one-way ticket, with the additional "ticket office was open at departure time" penalty surcharge.

From what I can tell from the fine print on this page, it's valid on Acela Regional trains (and Clockers, I guess) except after 11:00 A.M. on Friday and Sunday.
