I agree with comments in another thread regarding how much Amtrak has to pay for bustitutions, hotels, etc. What amazes me is how they get away with sometimes doing neither and messing up people's trips. The Sunset has recently been annulled alot. How about somebody's long planned trip? This can foul hotel reservations, rental cars, visits with friends, etc. Busses are a pain but when none is offered, people are really stuck. There seems no logic in how Amtrak decides when to annul, when to bus, when to offer no alternative. It is all over the place.

Been there. Bought expensive day of purchase air tickets to make scheduled meetings when #6 was twelve hours late and no bus was offered to get passengers from Iowa to Chicago to make the connection. A decade or so ago there was always a bus when that happened. Not now--I'd guess because saving dollars is more important to Govrail than service.
