Does anyone know why the Viewliner Roomettes heading south from NYC or DC to WPB are $160 extra but heading north from WPB to DC or NYC are $278 extra no matter WHAT days I put in in January 2006? I also tried some December dates; same thing. I know prices go up with bookings/use, but you cannot tell me so many more people come north in winter FROM FL than go south! This is really weird. Try a few dates and you will see what I mean. I tried phoning Amtrak about it but the reservation person was helpless and said what is in the computer is correct!!!

Give it some time. When I booked my May trip from Pasco, WA to Chicago, a roomette was $560 (total for two people) and a family room was $490. Last month, the roomette dropped to $419.

I switched my tickets with no penalty, and saved $71.

I think I am going to go in the other direction anyway, Silver Meteor to FL, then out with the Sunset Ltd and eventually back to NE on the Crescent. Still, I feel sure this is a glitch somewhere in the pricing and would like to make someone at Amtrak aware of it.

I just checked #91 from Rocky Mount to Florida on December 26. The website says a roomette to Orlando is $260 per person; a roomette to Fort Lauderdale on the same train is $132. Guess I'll buy a ticket to Fort Lauderdale and get off in Orlando.

When I booked my Sunset Limited trip for far in advance, I asked for a lower level sleeperette (which people here told me would be number 11, 12, 13, or 14). But the Amtrak agent couldn't get me one for the same price as the upper-level sleeperette; in fact, it was a LOT more. Why should one sleeperette cost more than another? I thought prices went by how much the train is filled up; if you books early, I thought you could get whatever sleeperette you want.

Recently checking sleeper prices on the Crescent, I found roomettes priced more than bedrooms on the same train. Way to go, yield management!

Logic is of no consequence in the pricing of sleeping accommodations. In one day on September, 2001 I received 3 different prices for the same run from Palatka, FL to Washington, DC on the Silver Meteor for the same accommodation. Go figure it out!!!
