A practical question:

Does anyone have a personal philosophy regarding the "best" time to use the downstairs shower on a Superliner sleeper (particularly on the Southwest Chief and the Empire Builder?)

On my upcoming trip, I'd prefer to avoid it when:

a) the water's ice cold.

b) the shower is a slimy, hairy mess because five people have used it immediately before me.

c) there's an impatient family of twelve waiting outside the door.

I'd imagine that mornings are Prime Time. But for all I know, "shower rush hour" could be after 10 at night because nobody wants to miss their meals or the scenery.

Has anyone noticed a general "behavioral trend" during their long distance travels?

My experience on SuperLiner equipped trains is that the best time to shower is evenings. Least crowded, most hot water, least "slime" seems to be during the dinner hour but you may then miss a meal seating. A bit later is not too bad........but activity picks up just before "bedtime" 9-midnight. Worst time is in the morning before the first breakfast meal seating.

I showered on the Sunset LTD in the early morning (6 am) and at night (before 10pm). Hot water was available both times. "Rush Hour" seemed to be after 6 in the morning and after 10 pm at night during my trip. Just get in early.

I've only ever had to wait for a shower once. Each time I did it mid-morning. The attendants keep it fairly clean anyway.
