Fellow Travelers,

Right now on the website Amtrak's Superliner Roomette is available on the eastbound 'California Zephyr' from Emeryville to Chicago departing Tuesday, April 18 for a 'mere' $242.00. If this is a trip anyone is interested in before 'diner lite' strikes the CZ, here is your chance.

I don't know what cosmic alliance caused this accomodation to be priced this low. I do know that departing either the day before or the day after brings an accomodation charge in the $400.00 range.

I discovered this while, frankly, looking for some sort of unexpected bargain. I've been plugging different variables into the computer for a month now before stumbling across this CZ fare. For the record, I just booked a roomette on the CZ departing Chicago westward to Emeryville on April 18 for the same $242.00 accomodation. Out of morbid curiousity I went back to the Amtrak website five minutes later and checked the fares again. The accomodation I had just booked minutes earlier was showing a $328.00 fare when I revisited.

Strange.......very strange.

[Eek!] Insert Loony Tunes theme here. [Eek!]

Perhaps the website fares are now being set by the same people who program slot machines in Vegas.

David, this goes with the explanation I mentioned in another thread. With ticket agents all over the country the cheaper room was sold out somewhere else and that was the last at that particular level so the price went up. I have gotten agents in Philly,Chicago and San Francisco. Have a great trip and give us the report when you get back. This is the first time in 12 years we are not making the trip and I must admit I envy you.

Tuesday Update:

The roomette mentioned in this post is now up to a $328.00 accomodation charge plus the $135.00 rail fare.

Not 'horrible' but more than I would be willing to pay for a solo ride.
