I saw either a conductor or assistant conductor at LA Union Station with one of the new uniforms. He had yellow epaulets on both shoulders.

I didn't like the look of the new uniform. Are they trying to be airline pilots or something?

Paul,
When I rode the Silver Star in June, 2006, some of the op crew in Florida had the new white shirts w/gold epaulets.

They looked OK. RR lexicon has referred to Conductors as Captain.

Looks like it. The yellow, and short sleeves deffinetly does not look like a railroad employee.

On my Surfliner R/T to Los Angeles on Tuesday the conductors had the new "Aviator" shirts and epaulets. On the return trip I asked one how he liked them. He didn't. He said the shirts were warm and they only got one so "my wife has to wash and iron it" everyday. I assume they can buy more. The epaulets (His was gold with blue Amtrak logo and the other was dark blue with light blue Amtrak logo) are too big. They remind me of a F/A costume that QANTAS came up with several years ago. The crews called it the "Cinema Usher" outfit. It didn't last long.

I was talking with a sleeper attendant on my latest Southwest Chief trip about the new uniforms. He and I agreed it was foolish that Amtrak is issuing new uniforms and new silverware with the swoosh logo...but can't find the money to continue operating full diners, and refurbish more Superliners. Gotta love where the priorities are. [Confused]
