What is the deal exactly with luggage? Does it get checked or do you have to take it to your seat? Is there really enough room in the overheads to hold two pieces of luggage for each passanger? I am going from Mass. to Calif. in September and I can't imagin having to cart my luggage around for three hours in Chicago while waiting for the next train. This is my first trip in about 30 years, Boy did I pick a bad time to take a trip. My parents don't like to fly so this is the alternitive. Sideout1961

In some stations, now, they've stopped allowing checked luggage. There will probably be plenty of room in the overhead rack for your luggage. I've been able to store 3 backpacks and a duffel bag up there before when the car was full.

You would probably have to do this anyway if you are switching trains. There are storage lockers in Chicago Union Station which you could keep your luggage in while you walk around the city.

Assuming your origin and destination stations have checked baggage services, you should be able to check your bags through.

In view of the worsening service on long-distance trains, do you think it a good idea to check through luggage or carry it to my sleeper? I have visions of my baggage car (on the Sunset) being uncoupled somewhere out in west Texas and then picked up by a Chicago-bound train. Or am I worrying needlessly?
By the way, the LA arrival times for the Sunset are bordering on the ridiculous ... last Friday's arrival in LA was 5 hours, 49 minutes late, continuing a worsening trend.

I traveled on the Sunset LTD eastbound last Friday night. There was some confusion at Union Station in LA. When I tried to check my baggage through to Charlotte, NC via JAX the agent told me that JAX was no longer checking baggage so I put it all in the storage area of the Superliner Sleeper. When I arrived in JAX they were checking baggage. So I checked my baggage to Charlotte via Raleigh with no problems. Check with the agent at you departure station.
