I've been away from the states for the past year or so. Whatever happened to Amtrak's plan for a Talgo route between Los Angeles and Las Vegas? This would have been a very popular service, I am sure.

It's not going to happen w/ the Talgos as UP doesn't want 2/b worried about having to set out the whole train if something goes BO the train being articulated. There were other problems w/ desert tortise, Cima Hill, & Amtrak not having enough equip. This was covered here in more detail last fall.

The would-be LA-Las Vegas Talgo was painted silver and blue just like the Surfliners. That train set is currently running on the Pacific Northwest between Seattle and Vancouver BC.

According to the February edition of Trains Magazine, the study involving the desert tortoise was complete and the second track was approved, indicating that there would be more of a negative impact in the case of a no-build. Perhaps the trains will show up eventually...
