The Sunset Limited (train # 2)that left N.Orleans on Tuesday (April 23) reaching Florida Wed. the 24th had a vista dome car on the rear. It was lettered for Northern Pacific and had an NP type paint job (though not a perfect match). Does anyone know the heritage of this car, ie., was it an original NP dome and what was its Amtrak number? I believe it started this trip in Indianapolis, went to CHI, NOL, JAX ,and then up to WAS and on to Cincinnati.

This should give you all the info you could possibly want about NP dome cars. Have fun.

I observed this car parked at Chicago Union Station on Sat Apr 20. It was parked in consits with several of the St Louis Car Company fleet.

The car observed was of Budd manufacture with unpolished stainless steel. The only exterior paint was a green letterboard strips which was marked Northern Pacific.

Thanks ReggieRail. The car I saw on the Sunset last week was the ex-NP 558.

Are there any web sites with historical info about old Illinois Central cars? I loved the City of Miami and would like to find info on their observation cars. Thanks.

Train Web, the sponsor of this forum, has just about anything a rail fan could want. If it's not on their site there are links to where the info can be found. Click on the Train Web logo, top left corner & go to search. Have fun.

The book DOMELINERS by Zimmerman has the best listing of where the dome cars went.
I only wish that Amtrak had them still, and used them the way ViaRail does.
