A friend and I are taking our young grandsons on a trip from Austin to Chicago this Thursday. We reserved a Family bedroom on the trip up but had planned to come back in coach. Last week AMTRAK called and offered us a discount on two Standard rooms right across the aisle from each other. They offered the rooms for $100 each. That was what I paid to make that same trip in the late 1980's. I jumped at the offer and was impressed by the marketing effort.

I've heard someone else on an AOL board got a similar call from Amtrak, and are paying half price ($200) for a standard sleeper between Chicago and LA. It sounds like Amtrak reservations is doing everything it can to earn a little extra cash on rooms that would otherwise go empty.

As I previously reported to this Forum, on a trip this past February, I was booked Standard on all of four legs of the trip. However, Amtrak phoned me on date of departure and offered an upgrade to Deluxe Chgo-Wash for $50 and Orlando-New Orleans for $100.

I guess it took about "half a heartbeat" to accept; probably the only time in this life that I have ever purchased anything from a "telemarketing of sorts" call.
