Am booked with a business class ticket round trip from New York to Toronto on the Maple Leaf. I have been on this train a while ago. What is the advantage of business class? I got this as a gift, so am assuming it involved an extra cost ).

Probably not much advantage on this type of train. Along the NEC the advantage is reserved seating, but the Maple Leaf is all reserved anyway. Its a special seating section usually next to the snack bar and drinks (not alcohol) are included.

Seats always seem the same to me, though it may be 2-1 seating as opposed to the 2-2.

Although I have not travelled in business class on this train (I use it several times a year between Toronto and Niagara Falls) I have always seen this small section of the lounge car when purchasing refreshment from the take-out counter. It usually consists of regular "2+2" coach seats, usually without the curtains on the windows that some cars have. Occasionally there has been a club car with "2+1" seating. On one trip the Amtrak conductor of the Toronto-bound train put mothers and their screaming babies in the business class section. I am assuming that there were no paying business class passengers on that run. If there were, I imagine they would be downgrading to the much quieter regular coaches.
