I just read a story from NARP that says the Bush Administration is trying to torpedo Congressional funding for Amtrak. This happend on July 12. The White House sent over a list of items Congress could cut and the Amtrak money was on that list. Does anyone else have information on this apparent stab in the back?

If that happens, I hope that Gunn does shut Amtrak down after all...then we'll see what North American passenger rail comes to after this; it'll be Bush's downfall, because no contingency plans will be in place to avert the service disruptions...

It won't be the "downfall" of President Bush, but it will make a decent sized bruise on the side of his face.....
E-mail him or write him; I have.

Where the heck does Twig get his approval ratings from anyway? The entire population of a one-horse town in nowhere Texas? This guy is so out of touch with the Average Joe it's amazing.
"Hey but we're at war." Well, we are losing the war on terrorism, if we were winning, there would be no terrorism because there would be no threat, and we're always getting new threats. Right?

This story's been overtaken by events. The latest is that the funding is included in a homeland security spending bill that Congress passed on the 18th and Bush is expected to sign this week. (At least we hope so.)
I bought tickets in February for a trip in August. So far, it's been one of the most exciting (or nerve-wracking) vacations I've ever had. And I haven't even got to it yet.

Anyone who has looked at the British privatisation experience will know that breaking up Amtrak is no way to run a railroad. Gunn deserves the chance (and enough money) to put his ideas into practice.
