Using "Rail Sale" tickets I try for standard sleeper discounted prices after I board. I'm thinking of going to Chi. on the Eastbound Chief then Empire Builder to Seattle and Coast Starlight to Redding. Visit eldest son. Redding to Sacramento. Zephyr to Galesburg on to LRC. In your opinion, how good would be my chances of getting a sleeper on these legs traveling the first or second week of November? BRAD

Generally speaking, getting a sleeper on a weeknight (Monday-Thursday) will be easier than on a weekend (Friday-Sunday.) I'd guess the Coast Starlight runs will be the toughest, and the most expensive. On the others you may be able to get a Standard room, which is still better than coach.

The "official" rail sale rules state that you can only upgrade to a sleeper after you board the train.
Still, you might want to ask about an upgrade at the ticket window when you arrive at the station. The agent might be able to give you a room if one is available. And it'll save you the hassle, once you're on board, of having to chase down the conductor who'll be busy taking care of other business
