According to Trains Magazine, the consist was as follows:

262-F40
312-F40
1139-Baggage
39908-Hi-Level Step-up coach/dorm(crew)
34083-Coach
34068-Coach
34040-Coach
39973-Hi-Level Lounge

All went into the bayou except the last 4 Superliner cars.

??????? - was this a recent "crash into the bayou?" Or are you talking about the 1993 accident?

Both Coaches #34068 and #34083 were scrapped. Becoming the third and fourth Superliners to die

How many people died in this crash?
I believe it was in 1993.

47 people perished in the 193 Sunset Limited tragedy.

Your welcome!

Does anyone know if coach 34040 was scrapped or returned to service? It was the one "dangling" from the bridge. It is pretty "famous" as it was seen in a bad way around the world in news media reports.

I have never seen it in service before but it may be out there. Thanks.

Coach 34040 had quite an interesting life.

It was returned to service after the Sunset wreck. But on February 8, 1995, the Pioneer wrecked. Badly damaging coach 34040. I do not know the cause of the wreck or any other cars involved but I do know that coach 34040 still sits a Beach Grove as a result of the Pioneer wreck. Last I have seen is that it is listed as probable scrap. It has been waiting at Beach Grove longer than any other Superliner.

Thanks for the info! That's very interesting. I hope it is saved. It would be neat to ride in 34040 since it has such a history.

I think it would be more of a curse actually. it may have survived two crashes, but you know the phrase- "third time's a charm"
