I got a mail solicitation to apply for an Amtrak Mastercard. It sounds like a great deal. Have others here used it? Do your points get credited as promised? The introductory interest rate was 7-something. Has anyone here had one long enough to experience how often and how severely they increase that?

I've had the Amtrak Mastercard for about a year. The points do indeed get credited to my Guest Rewards account quickly, and when I had occasion to need the card issuer's customer service, they did a pretty good job.

I'm not sure about the interest rate, since I always pay my balance in full.

The Amtrak Mastercard Rocks! I use it all the time, except when I go to Costco and then I use my Green American Express Card. If you pay $110 for a Green American Express Card, they give you something like 30,000 points for free and that's enough to buy a $300 gift certificate on Amtrak. Work out the math, you can't lose!

Like Trainman, I always pay off my credit cards in full so I never have to worry about interest. But the points add up ever so quickly and before you know it, you can get free trips on Amtrak! I have never had a problem with my Amtrak credit card. The points seem to be added up pretty reliably. And redeeming the points is a breeze.

I highly recommend you get the card.

Tigger,
The Amtrak Guest Rewards MC is good and it posts the points regularly to my Guest Rewards account.
Bonus is double points when you pay for your Amtrak fare w/it.

Tigger, if you plan to do more traveling on Amtrak the Guest Rewards program is a good one. The credit card helps you rack up points a lot faster than if you just have a Guest Rewards membership.

But since this is your first Amtrak trip, you may want to just join Guest Rewards first (I believe there is a way to have your already-paid-for-but-not-yet-taken trip added to your points balance after you join). Once you have some train experience under your belt, and if you find you want to take Amtrak more often, you can get the credit card and have your points balance transferred to your credit card account.

The credit card is a well run program, but you may not want to jump into it until you have some train-riding experience.
