My party of 4, 2 adults and 2 children, is about to travel on the Empire Builder in a family bedroom. One of the kids and one of the adults are what's euphemistically referred to as "plus-size." I have wondered how comfortable we'll be, and whether or not it is safe for heavier people to sleep in the top bunks.

i dont know what you call heavy but i way about 210 and had no problems on a top bunk. also i dont know how tall your children are but there are little beds on the side of the family room. enjoy your trip.

Upper bunks require some agility to get into. I usually suggest that the smaller individuals use the uppers.
The lower bunks are also wider than the uppers.
The Family bedroom has one set of adult sized bunk beds and one set of youth sized beds (slightly shorter than the adult beds). Since you say only one adult and one child in your family are "larger" you should be fine with the two lower bunks.
