I'm going to be traveling on the Vermonter during the next few weeks.
Does anyone know which railroad (or railroads) handled passenger service on the stretch between St. Albans, Vermont and New Haven, Connecticut prior to Amtrak?

I don't think there was any. But I'm not sure.

The Montrealer(NB)/Washingtonian(SB)circa 1956 when I first rode over the route was operated as follows:
Wash-New York, Penn - Pennsylvania RR New York-Springfield - New Haven RR Springfield-Windsor, VT - Boston & Maine Windsor-E Alburgh - Central Vermont E Alburgh - Montreal - Canadian National

I believe that this list of railroads is correct. In the period just before Amtrak took over, though, the Pennsylvania and New Haven were part of Penn Central.

Thanks for the information everyone. I always like to know a train route's pedigree before I set off on an Amtrak trip. So I'm glad to know that (in my imagination at least), I won't only be traveling on Amtrak, but on CN, Central Vermont, B&M, and the New Haven as well.
