I asked both here and at Amtraktrains about traveling NYC to Chicago. I'm leaning towards Three Rivers, though they don't have a diner. Apparently the lounge car has tables one can sit at. Good enough. My question is: which is just a nicer train with nicer scenery? Is the lounge car on Lakeshore similar to the one on Three Rivers?
Thanks for any advice.

Both routes are worth the price of a ticket. But the Lake Shore Limited definitely wins.

Yes, the Three Rivers travels around the Horseshoe Curve -- which is especially impressive if a freight train, traveling in the opposite direction, starts heading around the curve at the same time. But the circuit only takes about four or five minutes.

The Lake Shore Limited travels along the amazing Hudson River for at least two hours. It's one of the most beautiful stretches of railroad scenery in the nation.

As for the lounge car. . . there are several variations (lounges, cafe cars, dinettes). There's no way of telling what type you'll get, but all have tables.

If you're doing a round trip, why not take one route going and the other route on your return?

Thanks Dilly. That's good info about the Hudson River. Unfortunately, I'm only going one way. But I'll see which ticket is cheaper when I go to purchase.

If you decide to take the Lake Shore Limited out of New York, pick a seat on the left side of the car. It's the "river" side.

Just remember to move fast during the boarding process at Penn Station, because other passengers will have their eye on the same seats.

P.S. If you haven't already done so, check the "rail sale" page at Amtrak's web site.

The railroad typically offers truly spectacular coach deals for both the Lake Shore Limited and the Three Rivers.

Thanks Dilly!
I'll look at the Rail Sale page!
