I am booked on coach already and I checked Amtrak's site to possibly upgrade. It gave me a price but does this mean that space is still available?

Absolutely, if you entered the accomodation of your choice and the system reported back an itinerary and a price, that can be considered a "QUOTE", or hence, an offer. Had you choses to book at that ime, or accept, that is the price and accomodations at which Amtrak has made a contract with you for carriage.

If you have made the decision to upgrade to Sleeper accomodations (a wise choice, if you ask me)and "the price is right" by all means get out the plastic and enter the info into their secured site.

You now have a transportation contract; both sides have have consideration, presumably they and you are competent parties, and offer and acceptance has occurred.

Safe statement that a contract is in place.
