Amtrak is still trying to get back on schedule after a CSX freight train derailed in Alexandria, Va., yesterday morning, causing the passenger carrier to suspend most service south of Washington, D.C.


Today, the Silver Star(trains 91 and 92), Silver Meteor(trains 97 and 98), Palmetto(trains 89 and 90), and Carolinian(trains 79 and 80) will operate as scheduled, but are expected to experience delays. Auto train service between Lorton, Va and Sanford Fla., which begins its run south of the derailment, will operate as scheduled.

All Amtrak Regional service between Newport News and Richmond, Va., and Washington, D.C. is suspended today, with all southbound Regional trains terminating in Washington. The New York City-Atlanta-New Orleans Crescent(trains 19 and 20) will originate and terminate in Manassas, Va. Passengers will be provide bus transportation between Washington, D.C. and Manassas.

Passengers on the westbound Cardinal (train 51) will be provided bus transportation from Washington, D.C. to Charlottesville, Va., where they will board a train for the balance of the trip to Chicago. Passengers on the eastbound Cardinal (train 50) will be provided bus transportation from Charlottesville to Washington, where they will board a train to points north.

Early Thursday morning, CSX freight train Q41016 bound from Richmond, Va., to Philadelphia Pa., derailed 19 of its 96 cars just south of Alexandria. No one was injured and while there were 12 hazmat cars in the consist, none were breeched.
