For advertisement purposes, the same as every other entity whose logo appears on phone cards these days.

CoastStarlight99, my cell phone usually always works on the train, I'm up here in the Northeast and use Verizon Wireless as my provider. The only time my phone didn't work was in the Appalacian Mountains on the Capitol Limited, and that was only when we weren't in a town but out in the middle of nowhere! Those Amtrak phone cards to me are rather pricey, I bought a $5.00 card and got a lousy 13 minutes out of it back in December 2002!

Same here! Only 12 minutes for $5!
Cell works 75% of the time, bit on the coastarlight when your going thoroug nowhere and right by the ocean, service is bad.

FWIW, on my last Starlight trip (Salinas-Salem) my cell phone showed a strong signal for most of the trip, save for about an hour in the Cascades when there was no signal. I made a call from a lower level room in the forest somewhere between K-Falls and Chemult with no trouble at all.

I think Railfone charges like $1.99 a minute and you need a credit card as others have said. Since my cell phone works so well, I probably won't ever need railfone but it is a nice touch. On an unrelated note, last week, I rode Train #49 and we had 3 Horizon Coaches in the New York Section along with a Horizon Cafe Car Labeled "San Luis Obispo", and it had a railfone in it.
