Hi,
I want to travel NYP-CHI in a sleeper on #49 but it is fully booked from NY, although there is sleeper space left from ALB-CHI on the Boston half of the train. Am i going to cause too much trouble or even cause myself problems, by buying a coach ticket NYP-Schenectady and a sleeper ticket ALB-CHI and changing between the two at Albany?

Thanks

I doubt there would be a hassle because time is spent at Albany putting both sections together. You would have to detrain and wait for the boarding call. But I don't see why you would have to purchase a ticket to Schenectady, you can purchase a rail fare from NY-Chicago then add on the accomodation charge Albany-Chicago.

Coming from New York, you can't book NYP-ALB On Train #49 as Amtrak provides frequent Empire Service between those two cities, thus why Mr. Anteo must book a coach fare from NYP-SDY. You can board Train #49 in Albany heading to points West but you can only board Train #448 in Albany if you're going East to Boston or any stop in between. As far as switching to a sleeper enroute, I don't see a problem with that, just explain to the conductor why you have two tickets to ride the same train, I once had 3 tickets to ride Train #48 from Cleveland to Albany!!!

Are you saying Amtrak would not allow a through fare to be purchased between NYP-CHI and then add a bedroom charge from ALB-CHI.

No, this isn't possible on Amtrak's Reservation System unless you break up the trip into two separate sections. Thus the reason to break up the trip into two reservations.
