Train 4 has derailed west of the Kansas City station. No cars turned over or jacknifed. No reported injuries.

For those that hate chasing links back and forth, here is the basic information and mis-information from the link, which is Kansas City Channel 9.
Must be #4. as the article says "The train was scheduled to make a stop at Union Station before heading on to Chicago."
Location: near 14th St & Metropolitan.
means nothing ot me, but is apparantly west of the station.
Number of passengers: 115 (why so few? I though the usual load was much higher than this.)
"Only one car was loaded with passengers" Given the number, I don't think so.
"None of the cars tipped over" A small picture show an offset of about one foot to 18 inches between two upright cars.
"Nine cars went off the railroad tracks"
since it says passengers "were transferred to other passenger cars" it must have been the back portion of the train.

Sounds like a low speed yard type derailment, probably near the station.

Are they still handling MHC's and roadrailers on the back of the SWC?

Hate to see the Chief derail

Glad no one was hurt, and it looks like the Superliners fared well too. Probably just underbody and truck damage.

do to recent car shortages could this become a problem for equipment, i mean how many extra cars does amtrak have now?

It would appear to me that the curtailment of four Viewliner sleeper lines would suggest that is presently the most critical equipment shortage confronting Amtrak.

While I'm confident the damage to the Superliners from this incident is minor and considering that Superliner assigned trains other than 52-53 are presently in their slack demand period, resources should continue to be directed towards returning the reported 20 (40% of the fleet) Viewliners out of service. In fact, if the Superliners involved are coaches, I doubt if they will ever be missed.
