Amtrak has geared up for another significant winter storm predicted to impact parts of the Northeast early this week. Engineering personnel have been inspecting interlockings to ensure that switch heaters are functioning properly and trains are being loaded with sand (to assist in braking) and stocked with shovels and deicing salt. In addition, catenary repair cars have been staged at points along the Northeast Corridor to address any ice-related problems with the overhead electric wires.
According to Amtrak sokeswoman Marcie Golgoski, all trains operating from Washington, D.C. north to New York City and Boston Monday morning and early afternoon have run on or close to schedule, but ice and freezing rain are expected to arrive after the snow and might affect operations later.
