Thanks for the info - I checked them and they did say they were frequently late. But - they mostly didnt say why they were late. Stopped for freight is one thing - 7 hours waiting is another. Just wondered what things hold them up. thanks, steve in so az

The really huge delays have been due to interruptions in the line of route, eg bridge out etc. Other delays are just due to sheer volume of traffic. Some say UP is heading towards a bit of a meltdown, like (was it?) 1997.
Then when you have huge delays, it affects the return working. So if the eastbound arrives in Orlando (or, more likely Sanford) more than 6 or so hours late, the next day's train to LA won't leave on time. And a late train just gets later, as the saying goes. Then it arrives LA really late, which then affects the journey to Orlando, and so on, and so on.
