Has anyone been to the Missouri or Illinois state fairs lately?

Im going to go to one within the coming week, and have to decided which would be better.

I could easily take the KC Mule from STL to Sedalia at 8 AM, get in a 11 or so and come back on the Mule at 4 PM and get in at 8 to Kirkwood.

Or I could take the Eagle from STL to SPR at 9 AM and get in at 11 or so and come back at 6 at night.

But is there a shuttle bus that could get us from the fair grounds to the station? Are the fairs even worth it?

LOL @ Boyishcolt - at least somebody here takes notice!

UncleBuck, I'd be interested to hear about this trip if you do it. I've been on the Eagle before but not the Mules.

I was just on the Mules this past Wednesday going from Kirkwood to Washington. Its a nice little ride we take every so often, and while in Washington theres usually a 3+ hour overlap between trains. Enough time to eat, browse the town, and sit by the River.

The Mules from STL to KCY is much more interesting in terms of scenery than the Eagles ride from STL to CHI.

Im guessing I'd have to go tomorrow, because I've got school starting up again this Thursday.

Most likely. How much time would I have in between trains 21 and 22, and would there be enough things of interest worth doing in that amount of time?

to GeoffM- The consist on the westward train was one engine with 4 single level cars consisting of a cafe/dinette/business car and 3 coaches.
On the eastward train it was one engine and 3 single level cars consisting of 2 coaches and a cafe car.
On the train west, after leaving Kirkwood 5 minutes late or so I thought, it ran about 65 MPH for most of the run there and we ended up 20 minutes late

STL to Herrman and JEFF CITy also work, with afternoon layovers and evening returns, from KC as well.

Washington and Herrman are good river towns. You can do touristy things in both cities.

Both towns are good for rail photos. At Washington, the station and tracks are very close to the river.

At Herrman, there's a couple of blocks walk to a bluff that runs along the rive on the east side of town.

Usually when we take these little trips we leave Kirkwood at 3:30 PM. The only times we've left on the 8 AM train is to go to Sedalia for the State Fair about 8-9 years ago, and to go to Kansas City.

We have gone to Hermann twice for Octoberfest. The first time it was OK, the second time it was awful. There were drunks as far as the eye could see, and each one louder than the next.

I've never been to Jeff City by train, but I did go there by bus on a 4th grade field trip way back when and have passed through a couple of times on our way to the Ozarks.

Im not so sure now. Couldnt go today, I had to do some things at school and am still looking for a car to drive to school, which Im close to getting, probably tomorrow though. The car(which we would trade in for the newer one) that I was going to drive to school, had a little problem... Bees. Went to put gas in the car and found a nest of bees living on the gas tank door. Also there were dead bees inside. Sprayed em, but when I got home, I opened the door to get out and two bees flew out, and either a wosp(sp) was waiting there or it was in the car too, but it was there.
So now Im pressing to find a car for Thursday, although I've pretty much got finalists.

But the state fair ends the 22nd(the Illinois state fair does), so either Saturday or Sunday.
Saturday, I've got a racquetball team picnic, which I think I have to go to, then Sunday I have a Baseball Double Header.
The only way I can go is if I skip the picnic, which shouldnt be too painful. I never skip Baseball.

FWIW, my school starts way to early. A few years ago it started the first of September, and now its starting August 19th. It might cost me a trip on a train.
