Could Ivan possibly tear up tracks, ruin roadbeds, etc. I was wondering about my trip on October 3 from JAX to NOL

Edith -- YES, that could happen, since much of the trackage through the Gulf Coast is rather close to the Gulf, and I hear there was up to 25-ft storm surge up there. The hurricane just made landfall overnight, so stay tuned to the news the next few days to find out the extent of the damage. It's hard to say whether they could get tracks rebuilt by 10/3.

Edith: See my reply to your other topic posting. I suspect the rail line will be badly damaged though the extent won't be known for days. The tracks go right beside Escambia Bay in Pensacola which took a bad hit and the I-10 bridge over the bay collapsed. The rail bridge is nearby and may be fine but only time and many inspections will tell. If it is in doubt, ask Amtrak to reroute you at no extra charge via Washington. You'll get to Chicago just as quickly and not have to ride a bus. Do NOT pay a fee to change the tickets or pay extra for a room when this is beyond your control.
