If I were to take the train from Chicago to Florida, with the object to board a cruise ship in Port Canaveral, what would be the best place to depart the train? I can purchase transfers from Orlando International Airport, but how close does a train get to it? Any reasonal cabbing distance?

From a quick glance at a map, Ms. Wood, it would appear that it is 40 some miles over to Port Canaveral. Figure on AT LEAST $100 for a taxicab + tip (remember the driver cannot get a return fare).

A more economical alternative would be to get out to McCOy Field (MCO) and use the bus service that originates there.

Possibly a one way auto rental at something less than rip off rates (there, they have a good chance of getting a return) could be arranged. Hertz has a counter and autos ready to go at ORL (no full time employee; someone comes over at train time).

We just took the Zaandam (Holland America Cruise) from Port Canaveral. My advice (good one too!) is to contact your cruise company and ask them for their own shuttle bus from Orlando airport to the dock in Port Canaveral. They charge a small fee and you are guaranteed on getting there on time for the ship's departure. Try that first!

My plan all along has been to use the cruise line's shuttle from the airport. My question is about travelling between the Amtrak depot and the airport. What sort of cab fare can I anticipate for an adult and 2 kids? Is there any shuttle service available that might be a little cheaper? We plan to arrive a day early and stay overnight at the airport Hyatt. At the end of the cruise we plan to depart on Amtrak the same day.

Call the cruise company and see if they can get their shuttle bus to swing by the train station and pick you up there.

I'm just guessing that cab fare from Orlando AMTRAK station to the airport would be $30-40.

Holland America Lines has a special deal with Amtrak for transporting passengers from the ship to the Amtrak Station and Orlando as such. Call the cruise companies for details. I'll bet other cruise companies have the same deals.
