My wife and I will be taking 572 from LAX to SOL on a friday. This is our first Amtrak ride. If all goes well, it leaves at 1110 and arrives at 1319. That is when we usually eat lunch. I splurged on business class seats, but I can't tell from their web site what to do about lunch. Apparently the train has a snack car; does that mean fairly good food, or should we bring a picnic lunch?

The snack car has sandwiches and other items suitable for lunch but I usually bring my own. It's cheaper and I know the food is fresh.

If you are in Business Class in the afternoon there should be complimentary "Snack Packs" available. This includes a small package of Lavosh crackers, cheese spread, a bag of chips, a small tub of salsa, shortbread cookies and a mint. If that would take care of you until SOL you'd be fine. Or, before you leave LAUPT, walk over to Phillipe's (Alameda and Ord) and get a couple of French Dip sandwiches (Lamb is my favorite) and some salads to go. They'll pack the "au jus" on the side. Bringing "outside" food on board to consume at your seat is perfectly acceptable. Have a great ride.
Frank in clear but soon to be wet SBA

YOu might want to bring a "picnic" lunch, the stuff in the cafe car is really just microwave sanwhiches, hot sogs. Muffins, chips, candy etc. Not exactly gourmet foods.
I dont mind it, but if you are looking for something more special then bring your own.
