I live in Florida and spend 2-3 months in Wyoming each summer. Last year it was my intent to start in Emeryville and work my way back to West Palm Beach in late September. Hurricanes arrived and my family asked that I take a quicker way home.

I have a ton of reward miles to spend, am heading to Wyoming in June and staying until mid September. I would like to attempt the same homeward bound plan but with Amtrak possibly being on very shaky ground at that time I am wondering if I should just use the miles in June heading out rather than later in September heading home. I prefer to go in late September to maybe see some fall colors but hate to get stranded if there is a problem.

Opinions?

Thanks,

Ray

I'm making plans to spend my points in June and July. Assuming that Amtrak's current funding will get it through the fiscal year one would imagine that everything will run through September 30....but who can say for certain.

I'm an optimist and believe that long-distance passenger trains will survive in the United States in some form.

That form may not be very pleasant though. We might lose some trains. We might some those that 'survive' trimmed to less than daily frequency.

They may even disappear altogether.

Write those letters and plan those trips you've always wanted to take now.

I have written my letters and will most likely spend most of my points early. Would like to spend them on my terms.

I have enough to cross the country and back so will save some and hope for the best.

I have hopes that things will work out.

Enjoy your trips, David.
