I'll be stopping San Antonio on my way back east on the Sunset Ltd (assuming it's still running when I plan to do it). I know the website here recommends the Best Western near the train station--but is that a good, safe location convenient to the attractions? It seems a little too far east compared to where most of the other hotels are. Does anyone have any other recommendations? I would like something reasonably priced, safe, not super noisy, and in a good location with regard to tourist attractions. Don't need anything fancy, just comfortable. What about La Quinta Inn San Antonio Convention Center (there is more than 1), anyone know much about that? What about the Hampton Inn on the Riverwalk (again, there is more than 1), is that good? Any other recs much appreciated. Thanks

Last summer we stayed at the Courtyard Marriott on the west side of downtown. It was about an $8 cab ride at most from Amtrak, was clean, quiet, and safe. They had decent prices for our visit. There is a very inexpensive street "trolley" that stops right beside the hotel that goes right to all the downtown attractions. I think we did have to order dinner in as there weren't lots of restaurant choices by the hotel but that worked out fine. There are many hotels right by Riverwalk but many are quite expensive.

If you can stay on the Riverwalk, do it. And don't forget to take the Riverwalk boat tour. It is entertaining and informative, plus you get to see all the unique businesses along the river.

La Quinta Convention Center is a good bet - between downtown and the station on Commerce Street (walkable if you're not carrying too much luggage), good location on the east edge of downtown, and a close walk to the main attractions. Should be less $$$ than the big names on the Riverwalk too. Was recently constructed and should be plenty nice.
The main attraction is the Riverwalk (yes, do the barge ride by all means, not expensive) and the eateries and nightlife along it. Close by is the Alamo (#1 tourist spot), River Center mall, and you can always hop on one of the green VIA trolley buses and go to "El Mercado" on the west side of downtown for some good Mexican food and shopping.
No problem walking that area day or night. Take a look at the old Sunset Depot next to the current Amtrak station - a really nice historic station that the city handed over to private interests and is now a night club. The actual Amtrak station will not impress!

You don't say when but I hope its not April 20 - 27. That will be "Fiesta". It is billed as Texas's #1 block party. They close off streets and millions of people come to the downtown area. Tourists love it and hotels are booked solid many months in advance. You might still be to find one though, just not downtown. I live in north San Antonio and watch the parades, etc. on T.V. I rode through downtown this morning and it was a gigantic hassle.

The Best Western is a good hotel. I was there a couple of months ago, on business.
It's located a couple blocks walk from the station and parallels I-35, so it's a very easy walk to the Riverwalk from there. It's also likely less expensive than the Riverwalk hotels.
Includes a breakfast.
The location didn't seem noisy.
