My wife and I have sleeper reservations for Seattle to Oakland on July 28. Before we pay...

We would appreciate your comments about service disruption or budget woes that might affect this route. The usual 2 - 8 hour delays are not a problem for us, but we would hate to spend most of the trip on a bus!

Has anyone stayed recently at the Best Western Pioneer Square? We will overnight in Seattle on July 27 and are looking for a moderate quality hotel within walking distance of the station (half mile or less).

July 28th should be fine for the budget woes, track work is a different story. You should get into Oakland in the morning if the track work isn't too bad around Eugene to PDX. But if you miss a window, and the work hasn't been completed you could be delayed a few hours. UP knows pretty accurately when the Southbound Starlight is coming, so you should be pretty close to on time by PDX, and onwards. I would say noon at the latest for an arrival into Oakland.

Worst case scenario, which is highly unlikely, Amtrak goes bankrupt on October 1st.

Most likely scenario, you'll be delayed 2-4 hours, not 8.

I just returned from this train on June 13 and it was only about an hour or two late.
